Sleep and weight

Did you know that your weight and how much/little you sleep is connected?

Deprived on sleep, you might grab for several cups of coffee, and the body is looking for that “quick high”, a shot of energy in the form of easy carbs such as candy, that oh-so delicouse doughnut. And then when your done for the day, you feel that you don’t have the energy to go to the gym, you lay on the couch. And all of a sudden your back in bed, litteraly hearing the minutes go by until your alarms goes off again.  It is a vicious circle.

Hormones are linked with your appetite (leptin and ghrelin), but it also with your sleep (melatonin). When the sun goes down, and darkness sets. The body starts producing melatonin. That is why people living far up north are recommended to get a “day light lamp”, because when winter hits, and there is constant darkness. You will go around feeling sleepy.  When sunlight/daylight comes the levels of melatonin are barely detectable. Also a reason why, if you spend a lot of time on the computer before going to bed: You will have trouble sleeping. You have been exposed to the constant light of the computer, and the melatonin has not started to get relized.

    Hi, this is good information! I developed sleep apnea about 10 years ago and didn’t know it. I added some 40 pounds before it was finally diagnosed! Thanks for posting.
